(Photo: Sheila Vargas)

Read for the Record is a campaign organized by Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation. Their main objective is to promote literacy, especially in low-income neighborhoods where a majority of children do not know how to read. Jumpstart and Pearson choose one book, promote it, and on October 6th hope others across the country sit down and read out loud.

The book that was chosen this year was Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. The English honor society on campus, also known as Sigma Tau Delta, joined in on the event by having Doctor Birge read in the children’s section of the library. Rocky the Raven also made an appearance along with Patricia Garrity. Students from the education department joined the event as well.

Sigma Tau Delta President Heather Brown commented on the event saying, “Read for the Record is such a cute, fun way to bring awareness to illeteracy. I’m grateful to Pres. Birge, Rocky the Raven and all my Sigmas who helped with the event! Next year, I think it would be nice to bring it to the schools in the area and get them involved since it is such an important cause. I liked the change to the Curriculum Library because it made reading Llama, Llama Red Pajama so much more cozy and fun.”

(Photo: Sheila Vargas)

After reading, Dr. Birge spoke a little about why he believes reading to children is so important.
The womens field hockey kept their spirits high after the team suffered a disappointing loss to Merrimack College on Tuesday night.

The Franklin Pierce field hockey team is now at two wins and four losses, but are optimistic about the remainder of the season. Merrimack walked away with the win after scoring one goal in the first half and three in the second the half. For Franklin Pierce, Rachel Baxter made five saves out of nine during the game.

Captain Danielle Dolan feels disappointed.

“We have the skills and ability to beat any team in the NE-10 this year,” she said, “we just did not play with the intensity that was needed last night to achieve a win.”

Regardless of the fact that the Ravens knew Merrimack was on a roll so far this season, Dolan said she and the rest of the team expected the outcome to be different. “Our plan was to drop their goalies save percentage, and stop their streak of winning. We knew they would give us a good game like any other year, but they came out harder than expected.”

Merrimack is now six wins and one loss.

“Despite the rut that we might be in at the moment, I still believe in this team. Our team has chemistry like no other team Franklin Pierce field hockey has seen,” said Dolan. “We just need to take that chemistry and put it into action on the field, and prove to the NE-10, our school, fans, and especially ourselves that we will be successful once we pull it together as a team, one unit.”

Dolan and her fellow senior captains Kim Jaksina and Beth Haight plan on leading the team to victory in the next game on Thursday September 22, 2011 against St. Michael’s at Sodexo Field.

“The election went really well with 212 freshman voters,” said Nicholas Thistle, Executive Board Treasurer of the Student Government Association.

The class of 2015 voted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the glass foyer.

There were ten candidates who ran for the selected positions along with many write-ins. The available positions were President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and four Senators.

The election was hosted by the Executive Board and the Rules and Elections Committee. SGA
members had shifts to monitor the voting process.

“The election was a great way to start off the year,” Thistle said. ”SGA looks forward
to a productive and successful year.”

Election results for the freshman class have not been released yet. SGA meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Marcucella hall room 102 and the meetings are open to the entire campus.

Limited work space led Career Services to relocate to the first floor of New Hampshire hall.

Their previous location, under New Hampshire hall and next to Residential Life, was too crammed for the amount of staff.

Many of the staff also felt that it was not as noticeable to students leading to the resources career services have to offer not being used. The new entrance will be connected to the entrance of New Hampshire hall.

The move had been a goal of the center for a little over year. It was made possible by Lloyd Astmann, an alumni, who donated the funds towards the center.

The center is already settled into one full floor, that includes offices, an interview room, a career resource library and a conference.

Rose Mary Nichols believes the move of location to an area dominated by freshman is a smart move.

“I think there are a lot of advantages of students working with career services early,” she said, “It can help them identify potential careers and majors that will fit with their skills and interests. Staff can help students research, co-curricular and academic activities that will prepare them for their career of choice.”

Once the entrance to the Career Center is finished new programs will be launched that will directly target first year students in the 2011-2012 school year. They are going to be part of the career fest that will run from October 21st to November 4th.

Nichols said, “Students get an excellent academic foundation here but it’s very important to get extra added value skills and experiences as well.”

There will be an official dedication later in September for Lloyd Astman and his wife for their donation.

The new programs will be advertised through e-raven and will be posted on the center’s facebook page: www.facebook.come/fpcareerservices

Bodystories performance in the warehouse theater displayed dance projects of students for the spring semester

by Sheila Vargas
edited by Abbie Tumbleson

Students in the composition and dance technique classes presented five duets in a program they called Bodystories on Tuesday May 4.

The event was held at the Warehouse Theater at 7:00 p.m. and was a project the students had been working on throughout the spring semester. Their movements blended improvisation and dance performance. Each student was asked to work independently on dance sequences and then combine their ideas with those of a partner in order to create the duet they then presented.

“We worked on our duet for a month,” said sophomore Jaime Montagno, who is majoring in both education and dance.

“We practiced every Tuesday in class and the students would give us feedback, it was always very positive. I also met with my partner outside of class.”

The nine student performers were Elissa Cummings, Sarah Dembishack, Nora Cuddy, Alex Hajjar, Jaime Montagno, Gabrielle Aufiero, Colette Fortin, Heather Wilson and Crystal Pratt.

Kimberly Brothers, who saw the performance for the first time, said, “The part I found the most interesting was when Colette and Heather used their bodies to make noises instead of using actual music like everyone else.”

Gabrielle Aufiero, who performed twice during the night commented on her performance by saying, “I think you can always improve but in terms of this performance I have no complaints. This was also the first time I’ve worked with Jamie.”

After the dance portion of the program there was also a piece of a theater final project presented from the advanced acting class. They read a portion of the children’s book “Haroon in the Sea of Stories.”

Senior Courtney Falite, who read with the advanced acting class, also performed two monologues for the crowd on her own as well as a dance piece.
