Judicial charges are expected against a student involved in a racial incident.
According to Jim Earle, Vice President of Student Affairs, the alleged altercation was reported on Sunday morning around 8:00 a.m. A student reported that three individuals were outside his/her door and they were using racial slurs during the early hours of Sunday morning, Feb. 28. It was also alleged that bottles were broken and one of the perpetrators urinated on the individual’s door. After a period of time, it was claimed that the victim opened the door and was pulled down to the ground. The individual sustained some injury to the side of their head from the broken glass on the ground and were treated at the hospital.
The alleged incident was reported to police and they are cooperating with the university on this matter. The university opened an investigation beginning Monday March 1. Following the investigation, one of the alleged student perpetrators were found after several interviews with students on the victim’s floor.
The other students involved were found to be unregistered guests at the University. Residential Life is planning on meeting with the floor and is offering counseling services to anyone involved. Earle also stated that the issue was being discussed in Student Affairs as well as A.L.A.N.A and the Advisory Board.
“It is very painful for a community to deal with an incident like this,” said Earle. “But, we can’t turn back the hands of time, we need to turn this into an educational experience which will reduce the likelihood that this will happen again.”
Students that know any information concerning this incident are urged to come forward to help with the ongoing investigation.
“The more information we receive, the better,” said Earle.
