While many students are rushing to the airports and catching planes southbound to paradise on Friday, March 12th, I’ll be driving northward to a doctor’s appointment. This just happens to be the earliest date my local orthopedist could fit me in to examine my injured elbow, the same elbow that’s preventing me from joining my teammates on a plane to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Franklin Pierce’s baseball team is scheduled to play eight games in ten days while in Fort Lauderdale for spring training. They’ll visit the Santaluces Sports Complex, Nova Southeastern, and Lynn University. When they return March 21st, they will have already completed 1/3 of their season. That’s a productive spring break.
One of my roommates will turn twenty-one over spring break. He plans to celebrate in grand fashion with a trip to Cancun, and then keep the partying going back at school. He’s already survived cancer, but we’ll have to see if he can survive that week.

Considering I have been somewhere every spring break except for freshman year, I decided to do something more meaningful than sitting on a beach getting my tan on. My grandmother takes care of those who cannot take care of themselves, whether it be due to old age or a disease. I have helped her in this field before and when she recently asked me to work for her the week of my spring break so she could have a break and head to Florida, I immediately said yes. It makes me feel good to be able to make someone’s day and if that means helping them get out of bed and helping them get dressed, then I will do whatever it takes. For all of you who are going places make sure you have fun and please, do not forget to be safe!
